Just commenting to say that your unfavourable stance on the use of Wikipedia is paying dividends; based on the fact that I knew this about you, I surmised that the hyperlink for Burkian elitism would lead me to an actual high-quality source -- which I was gladly proven right about, since it led me to Burke's own words! Thanks for the share.
A very good take. It'd funny how this "coalition" has sn aftermath what could just be the highest seat count in canadian history this upcoming election! #ppforpm
I dislike this analysis. I don't think polling is at all a fair subsistute for parliamentary confidence. We have representive liberal democracy with professional legislators in fixed terms to administer the state and mediate political interest groups. You may dislike the current distribution of political power (as do I) but that doesn't make it a failing on the government nor of our political system to continue when he maintains confidence in parliament.
To say his low polling is evidence of that we're due for an early election would imply we should have early elections when the government also polls high which is not a good principle. These opinions already effect government and opposition parties by constraining descisions for in time with the next election which has a better part of a year to govern and sentiment remains in flux.
Honestly if I was a liberal partisan I'd prefer an election tomorrow so that Pierre's (or anyone else for that matter)'s inability to convince Trump to not destroy the global economy dooms the conservatives to 4 years.
One of the supposed principles of our system is that governments that have “lost confidence” should fall, not that governments that have “high confidence” should be rewarded. There’s no such thing as a “lots of confidence vote.”
There is no election because too many politicians are looking out for the pensions to call the vote (see Singh/NDP). Even crazier is that LeBlanc is the "Minister of Janitorial Affairs" as Trudeau's government collapses. Poilievre doesn't have to do anything but let the cards fall where they may because the longer Liberals/NDP drag this out the more seats his party will get. Bernier is too busy cosplaying a racist Trump with his Canada for all Canadians that are not non-white jargon all over twitter to call the vote. It's a real conundrum & there is a real cult of fuck boy Trudeau with people that want him to sit until 2026 & hate Poilievre. The security clearance situation Trudeau created keeps him from getting it because of the investigation, which is used as a point of division between those who follow him/against him which is why he won't touch it. Once he becomes PM I'm telling you he's going to stunt like a 1970s Liberal ala Pierre Trudeau cleaning up 8 yrs of Pierre Trudeau's offspring.
I am a trump supporter I have a lot of disagreements with you but I'll say this Canada should get rid of Quebec cuz it's clear they don't have the Canadian people's interested heart they care more about their own little province so much so they will literally keep an incompetent and corrupt idiot Trudeau in power so they can leech off the Canadian state for Goody's and handouts
An interesting period of time and location that occurred in relation to loss of confidence in a PM was Australia between PMs Rudd and Morrison in the late 2000s to late 2010s. Where we had 5 (or 6 Rudd had 2 terms) PMs in 10 years mainly because of 4 leadership spills (internal party coups).
Australia retained a very easy way to have leadership spills so politics during that period devolved into a carousel of PMs as opinion polls / confidence lagged and so they were deposed by their parties to the point ambulances had to stop using PM name in medical tests.
Firing PMs due to bad opinion polls / confidence / insecurity can quickly get pretty wild in practice.

Trudeau is making a bet that he'll look good compared to Trump. Not a terrible bet, TBH.

I don’t envy someone living in a democracy urged to vote one way just because some other country likes that guy better

Also a academic source that discuss that time calling Australia the coup capital of the democratic world:

Wait, we're not the only one who's in it. Israel is too!
